Studies that have monitored blood levels of ROS during pregnancies with FGR have shown an increased level of MDAa breakdown product of lipid peroxidation [49], as well as reduced plasma TAC [50] both in maternal plasma, placental tissue [51], and cord blood in the infants [52]
This is probably related to the adaptation mechanism against enhanced oxidative stress, thereby protecting the fetus from the detrimental effects of oxidative excess [42, 45], whereas data from several studies have demonstrated a reduction in antioxidants, specifically SOD and CAT in the placenta of GDM [33, 46]
